Why the distance changes
Venus comes closer to Earth than any other planet. Like Mercury, it orbits inside Earth's orbit: it is closest when it passes between Earth and the Sun and farthest when it is on the far side of the Sun. The pattern repeats about every 584 days.
Between 2000 and 2050, Venus is closest on January 1, 2046, at 39.6 million km (24.6 million miles), and farthest on June 11, 2000, at 259.7 million km (161.3 million miles).
At its closest Venus is still about 100 times farther away than the Moon. When it is nearest to us it is also almost directly in line with the Sun, so it is lost in the Sun's glare and shows only a thin crescent.

We checked its Earth distances against NASA JPL data (via Astropy) for dates from 1950 to 2045: they agree to better than 0.02%. Distances are measured center to center.
